Frequently asked questions

What is fair-do?

fair-do is software for independent tutors. You bring your own students and run your tutoring your way — fair-do gives you scheduling, secure video lessons, and card payments in one place. It's a tool you subscribe to, not a marketplace that finds students for you.

How much does it cost?

fair-do is a monthly subscription. Free is free (up to 5 students), Pro is around £29/month (up to 30 students), and Team is for teams. We take no commission on your lessons — the only per-payment charge is Stripe's standard card-processing fee, and we keep none of it. Full, current details are on our pricing page.

How many students can I have?

It depends on your plan: Free covers up to 5 active students, Pro up to 30, and Team has no cap. If you reach your limit, adding or inviting another student will prompt you to upgrade — your existing students are never affected.

What are quizzes and assessments?

Tutors can build practice quizzes and assessments per student — write questions yourself or let AI suggest them from your approved lesson notes, then review and publish. Students take them from their dashboard or a share link that works without an account, results are marked automatically, and parents on the parent portal see scores in a grade book.

What do parents get?

Tutors can invite a parent per student. Parents subscribe (£4.99/month per family) for a read-only view of lessons, shared notes and homework, the quiz grade book, invoices, and a direct message line to the tutor. See the parents page for the full picture.

Are my students mine?

Yes. The tutoring relationship and your student records belong to you. fair-do is the software and payment processor you use to run your tutoring — we don't own, route, or reassign your students.

Is my data secure?

Yes. fair-do is built around UK GDPR. For your student data, you are the data controller and fair-do acts as your processor. We use trusted infrastructure providers to run the service, and some sub-processors are based in the US under Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs). Our privacy notice sets out exactly who we use and why.

Are tutors qualified?

fair-do is for qualified tutors. During onboarding we ask for teaching qualifications (such as QTS or a PGCE) and a current DBS check, and verify the details before a profile goes live.

How do I get set up?

Create an account, choose "I am a tutor", and complete onboarding — your profile, qualification details, availability, and connecting your bank via Stripe so you can take card payments. Once your details are verified you're ready to schedule students and run lessons.

How do payments work?

Students pay by card through Stripe. Money goes to your connected account and typically reaches your bank around 2 business days after a lesson. fair-do's own charge is just your monthly plan — we take no commission; the only per-payment cost is Stripe's standard card-processing fee, which we keep none of.
